Something that is worth celebrating is my growth in skateboarding. Over the past couple months I have really started taking skateboarding seriously. My growth has improved as I continue to skate everyday. I went from being barely able to ollie to landing kickflips every time. The more I skated the better I got and the more time I put into it the more tricks I learned.
Something I'm really proud of is my article in the Sophomore Sentinel because I thought I did really well with that project and put in a lot of refinement and perseverance so that it could be the best it can be. When I started the paragraph I thought to myself “I want to put in my full effort to this article.” So I thought of a topic that relates to my community and state. Something that affects our economy and our town. I then elaborated on what evidence I could use to support my question and gathered data that backs that up. I looked far and wide to find the best results for the topic and made sure that the site was credible and a useful resource. Once I was done I made sure to edit and revise the paragraph and check in with a peer. I added a couple more sentences and fixed my errors before combining my article with Owen’s. We synthesized and elaborated before typing our final draft. After that we revised it once more and made sure that our article made sense. We finalized the article and published it on the website. My article was something I was really glad about completing and showing off.
I worked especially well on my Spanish Free Writes and showed lots of growth during the duration of the semester. This shows my active listening skill and my interpretation skills. At the beginning of the year I did not know that much vocabulary and did not know how to conjugate present and past tense verbs in Spanish. As the year continued I gained new vocabulary and understandings of the language of Spanish. Every now and then our class would do a free write where we show off our vocabulary skills and try to write as much as we could in the five minutes we had. At first I only wrote about 30 words and barely conjugated any of them. As the year progressed and my Spanish vocabulary which improved my word counts and speaking skills and I was able to conjugate every verb. Finally my free writes were worth reading. When I was recording my word count I had realized that from the beginning of the year I had doubled my word count and knew a lot of new spanish vocabulary that I was able to include it into paragraph.
Ditching was something that I had trouble with this semester. On some days I did not feel like coming to school because it was the main stress factor in my life and chose to ditch and go home. I missed many days of school and many projects that affected my grade. One week I missed three days of Biology where we were working on our Ecology Project. I missed crucial work time that I did not make up at home and later on affected the quality of my project. Ditching school is not only wrong, but is something that could affect my future and potentially ruin my success. I have resolved this issue by talking to my parents and making an attendance contract as well as attending every class I can everyday. I also have made it a priority to check in with Shaun and Libby once every week.
I struggled in Humanities because I had so much work to do but so little time to do it. I felt like I had homework almost 4 out of 5 days every week. I also have to deal with therapy and sports outside of school so it was hard to find time to do homework at home. I use my work time in class pretty well but somedays I just feel like doing nothing. And to be honest when I had the time I would most often procrastinate and not do my work. I would rather chose to play video games and veg out instead of important homework. This affected my grade immensely which in the end made my parents very upset. To resolve this issue I made sure that homework was the first thing I did when I got home and I couldn't do anything else until my homework was complete. I also need to put in double the effort into Humanities because that class is worth two credits and could potentially affect my future happiness. To fix this procrastination issue I have made sure that homework is the #1 priority when I get home and I can’t do anything else before I finish what needs to be done.
How has transferring from DHS to AHS affected my learning style and the way I act towards education?
I feel like transferring from DHS to AHS has been very beneficial and has changed my view towards education. I hate the fact that DHS gives you a textbook, expects you to study, and then do well on the test. No, that is the way we have been teaching kids for centuries and honestly it’s really boring. Animas on the other hand, involves kids and makes things interesting. It’s not about reading out of a text book it’s about gathering information and interpreting it in your own way. And at the end of the semester you show your teachers what you’ve learned.
